About WordBramble
What is in our dictionary, how scoring works, and why results come back this fast.
The dictionary
We ship 172,766 words, organised into 156,419 anagram sets. The base is ENABLE (Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon), a public-domain word list widely used by word game software. It tracks North American tournament play closely without the licensing restrictions of the official tournament lists.
On top of ENABLE we maintain our own curated additions. When someone searches for a word we do not have and tells us it should count, that report is logged. We review those reports, verify each word against a published source, and add the ones that hold up. Over time the dictionary reflects the words people actually play rather than a list frozen years ago.
How the solver works
Every word is indexed by its letters in sorted order, so listen, silent and tinsel all live under the same key. Finding your words means checking which of those 156,419 keys can be built from your rack — a single pass over a packed table of letter counts, which takes a few milliseconds.
Because the answer for a given set of letters never changes, each result page is cached at the edge after it is first requested. The second visitor to any letter combination gets a static page.
Scoring
Scrabble, Words With Friends and Wordfeud all use different tile values, so we calculate all three separately for every word rather than showing one number. Blank tiles score zero, and when a word needs a blank we subtract that letter’s value so the total matches what you would actually score. Full tables are on the letter values page.
Scores are face value. Board multipliers and the bonus for using every tile depend on placement, so we leave those to you.
Privacy
No accounts, no advertising trackers, and no third-party scripts. We log the letter combinations searched and words reported as missing, in order to improve the dictionary and decide which pages to pre-build. Those logs contain no personal information.
