Position matters
The letter unscrambler answers “what can I build from these tiles?”. This page answers a different question: “what fits here?” — the one you actually have when you are staring at a board with gaps in it.
Type the letters you can see and a # for each empty square. T##ST means T, two unknowns, then S and T: exactly five letters, in that order. Every result is guaranteed to slot straight in.

A pattern on its own searches the whole dictionary, which tells you what could go there. Add the tiles on your rack and we filter to what you can genuinely play right now — and if you hold a blank, type ? and we will score it as zero points, the way the game does.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between ? and # here?
A ? is a blank tile you are holding — it can become any letter and the word can appear anywhere. A # is an empty square on the board at a position you already know. T##ST can only ever be a five-letter word starting with T and ending in ST, while a rack of T, S, T plus a blank returns every word those tiles can build.
Can I combine a pattern with my own tiles?
Yes, and this is the most useful way to use it. Enter the board pattern, then add the tiles on your rack. We then return only the words that both fit the board and can be spelled with the letters you actually hold.
Does the pattern have to be the exact length of the word?
Yes. The number of characters you type is the length of the words returned, so T##ST returns five-letter words only. If you are not sure of the length, try the letter unscrambler instead.
Which characters can I use for an empty square?
We recommend #, but ?, _, . and - all work too, so a pattern copied from another site will usually just work.
